stellaris dance nz

stellaris dance nz is a new dance project company started 1st of May 2010 year by Marie Hermo Jensen. The company is a branching off of Stellaris DanceTheatre in Norway, and the two companies will continue to have a close relationship. The company aims to work for the development of contemporary dance and make contemporary dance more visible in Hamilton and the Waikato. In 2011 I joined the Waikato Contemporary Dance Projects Trust.

My dance background

I started dancing as a little girl at my mother´s dance school, Hammerfest Ballettverksted in Hammerfest, Norway, where I was born and raised. I guess you could say that I grew up in a house of dance, watching, participating and learning. The professional contemporary dance company, which worked alongside the school changed name a few times through the years, but is today called Stellaris DanceTheatre. The company is owned by my mother, Solveig Leinan-Hermo, and is likely the northernmost of it's kind. As I went on to study dance, I remained very close to the company, and earned my place as an apprentice.

Before I could make up my mind whether to persue dance professionally, I spent a year at Follo Folkehøgskole in Vestby. This led to a place at School for Contemporary Dance in Oslo, and later London Contemporary Dance School at The Place where I graduated in 2003 from the BA (Hons) Dance Degree Course. Since graduating in 2003 I have worked for Stellaris DanceTheatre (Norway) as a dancer, choreographer, admin worker and webmaster. I debuted in 2004 as a choreographer and has shown work mainly around the Barents region and in New Zealand.
